What is it about getting old as a woman?

  • Do we become invisible?
  • Not worth marketing to.
  • No longer a valuable contributor.
  • Not “aesthetically appealing” anymore.
  • Too opinionated.
  • On dating apps, men chasing younger partners skip right past us, and the rare ones who don’t feel like they could be our dads.
  • We’re told our mood swings and aches are just “hormones.”
  • We visit the doctor, and, hello again, it’s “your age” or “your hormones.”
  • The clothes we actually love are suddenly “not age-appropriate.”
  • We tick the 50–60 or 60–70+ box on every form.
  • Our bodies ache, sag, and rebel, even though we eat well and exercise.
  • We hide our favourite jeans, hoping we’ll fit them again someday.
  • Sex? You’d think we’d want it, but sometimes we’d rather sleep through Jason Momoa on our bed! (well maybe)
  • We’re called “mame” or “old lady,” shoved into the “senior bracket”-like hell!
  • “Age gracefully,” they say. Yet we’re bombarded by celebrities still pressured to look younger.
    I could go on, right?

But here’s the thing: our minds don’t have to age the way our bodies do, unless we let them. And I bet your “mental” age isn’t the same as your body feels!

I choose to stay silly, curious, playful, and open to learning.

How can Travel help with the aging process-or slowing it?

They say you are the sum of the people you surround yourself with. For me, travel has been that fountain of youth.

  • When I travel, I dive into new cultures and customs.
  • I meet people from all walks of life, of every age and background.
  • I expand my views, make friends across generations, and really listen.
  • My mind is bombarded with new sensations, situations, and I have to think on my feet.
  • Learning constantly from making mistakes, new opinions, and observations.

I started solo travelling at forty, and never once did anyone question my age.
It’s our own limiting beliefs that hold us back, not the years on our birth certificate. Though our physical bodies tell us otherwise.

Practical Tips to Reclaim Your Spark Through Travel

  1. Start Small, and Local
Book a weekend getaway to a nearby town or a nature retreat.
Test your solo-travel confidence on a shorter trip before leaping into a month-long expedition.
  2. Choose a “Buddy System” Departure
If fully solo feels intimidating at first, travel with a friend for the first leg.
Once you land and settle in, strike out on your own, knowing you’ve got that safety net.
  3. Join a Themed Small Group
Look for tours tailored to solo women 50+, whether it’s a foodie crawl, art workshop, or nature trek.
The shared interest unites you, and the small group size keeps it intimate.
  4. Embrace Slow Travel
Spend longer in fewer places. Immerse yourself in local life, take language classes, volunteer, or couch-surf.
Slower pace means deeper connections, with the place, the people, and yourself.
  5. Plan “Me Time”, Guilt-Free
Build in quiet mornings with yoga on the balcony, journaling in a park, or simply sipping coffee in a café.
Solo travel isn’t just sightseeing, it is also about reclaiming your space and pace.
  6. Pack Your Confidence Kit
Bring a journal, your favourite playlist, a language phrasebook, or a small “power object” (that scarf or necklace that always makes you feel good).
These little comforts can boost your confidence if nerves kick in.
  7. Connect Before You Go
Join online communities (Facebook groups, travel forums) for solo women travelers 50+.
Ask for tips, share your itinerary, and maybe find a meetup in your destination.
  8. Set an Empowering Intention
Before you leave, write down what you want from this trip: “Rediscover my courage,” “Make a new friend,” “Learn how to cook paella.”
Refer back to it when you need a reminder of why you chose this adventure.
  9. Celebrate Your Wins
Track your achievements, first solo train ride, first local-language chat, first sunrise hike, and give yourself credit.
Share your stories in your journal, on Instagram, or back in our Wanderlust Solo Travel Tribe.
