Right, so you have found this blog when you’ve decided it’s time to embark on a solo journey – to embrace the freedom of exploration, the thrill of discovery, and the empowerment of stepping out of your comfort zone. Or just a little time to “escape”!
But, with so many incredible destinations and experiences out there, where do you start and how do you choose the tour or retreat that’s right for you?
Well, I can help as I have been in your shoes and I’m here to guide you through the maze of options and help you find the perfect fit. I get it, as it can be a big decision, financially, emotionally, and be time precious, so you want to have the best experience, right?
First things first, let’s talk authenticity and purpose. When it comes to travel, it’s not just about ticking off destinations on a checklist or snapping Insta-worthy photos (although, let’s be real, those are definitely perks!). Authentic, purposeful travel is about connecting with the heart and soul of a place, immersing yourself in its culture, and leaving a positive impact behind. And believe me, you will get a better travel experience embracing this ethos.
That’s why it’s essential to choose a tour, retreat or travel experience that aligns with your values and ethos. Look for experiences that support local communities, champion sustainability, and celebrate diversity. That’s the values I built my travel business, Wanderlust Solo Women Tours on and I am passionate about fostering meaningful connections with the places we visit and supporting other women-owned enterprises along the way. Because when you travel with purpose, every journey becomes a force for good. So check the providers reviews and feedback, their ethos and principles to make sure you are not only going to have a fabulous journey but are also being part of the conscious and purposeful travel movement.
Now, let’s talk about personalized support. As a solo female traveller, having a support system in place can make all the difference in the world. This can be from loved ones championing your adventures, or systems in place at home to make your travels easier, such as pet sitters and employment flexibility. That’s where also, tours and retreats with a focus on 1:1 support come in. Where you are not just a number and feel confident you can reach out for advice and support at any time. This is where I understand that every traveller is unique, with their own dreams, fears, and aspirations. That’s why I offer personalized coaching and guidance every step of the way, from crafting your perfect itinerary to providing ongoing support during your journey with any adventure with me. So make sure the company you choose is easily contactable, with good communication and has great resources to help you with your travel experience, ( 5 gold stars if they specialize in solo female travel).
But enough about me and what I can offer – let’s get down to business. Here are some key factors to consider when choosing the right tour or retreat for your solo adventure.
Lets break it down:
Destination: Think about what type of experience you’re craving. Get more precise, and also think about how your budget and the seasonal aspect will impact the location you choose. Are you dreaming of serene beaches and lush jungles in Bali? Craving the rugged beauty and adrenaline-fueled adventures of New Zealand? Or perhaps you’re drawn to the vibrant culture and rich history of Cuba? Choose a destination that speaks to your soul and ignites your sense of wanderlust. Think also, what duration do you have to be away? This can have an effect on your travel experience as you don’t want to be spending all your time traveling from one location to another without having time to really take in where you are. Budget plays a major part in choosing a destination (along with a tour or retreat) so factor this in too, and work within your allocated budget, including any flights, visa, insurance, daily spend, and any incidentals.
Activities: What activities and experiences are on your must-do list? Whether you’re a thrill-seeker eager to try bungee jumping in New Zealand, a wellness enthusiast craving yoga and meditation in Costa Rica, or a culture vulture eager to explore the colourful streets of Morrocco, make sure the tour or retreat offers the experiences that resonate with you. Think about what you really need this travel experience for. Are you burnt out, in need of a reset, wanting inspiration or new connections? Don’t book a tour for example that has a tightly packed schedule when what you’re needing is some rest and downtime.
Group Dynamics: Consider the size and composition of the group. Are you looking for a small, intimate retreat where you can forge deep connections with like-minded women? Or do you thrive in larger groups with diverse perspectives and personalities? Choose a tour or retreat that aligns with your preferred group dynamics. Personally smaller is better! You make more genuine connections and have room for spontaneity. On my tours and retreats, I always tell the guests it is a team effort as group dynamics plays such a big part of everyone having a fun and memorable experience.
Support and Guidance: Importantly, consider the level of support and guidance provided. Does the tour or retreat offer personalized coaching, communication, and support to help you navigate any challenges that arise? Are there opportunities for 1:1 sessions with experienced guides or mentors? Look for experiences that prioritize your safety, well-being, and personal growth. Alleviating fears and anxiety are an important aspect of travel, and these often pop up, especially as solo female travellers, so having support systems and knowing you are being taken care of is super important when making your choice
Reviews and Reputation: Before making a decision, take some time to research the reviews and reputation of the tour or retreat company. Good reviews from fellow travelers can provide valuable insights into the quality of the experience and the level of support offered. Look for testimonials that highlight the company’s commitment to empowering female travelers and providing personalized support.
Business Ethics: Last but certainly not least, consider the ethics and values of the company. Do they support local communities and women-owned businesses? Are they committed to sustainable and responsible travel practices? Choosing a company with strong business ethics ensures that your travel experience is not only enriching for you but also beneficial for the places and people you visit.
Remember, the journey of self-discovery begins with a single step.
So trust your instincts, follow your heart, and choose the tour, travel experience or retreat that feels like the perfect fit for your solo adventure.
And if you ever need a helping hand or a friendly face along the way, know that I am here to support you every step of the way.
Safe travels and may your journey be filled with laughter, love, and endless adventures!
