Travel Solo Like a Pro!

On a recent poll within my travel community, the fear of missing a flight or a connection ranked at the top! And honestly, the thought of me racing through an airport, heart pounding, dragging my bag behind me while praying I make it in time—ugh, it’s enough to break me out in a sweat just thinking about it!

I’ve had my fair share of stressful flight experiences. Like the time I was connecting from Spain to France, sitting at what I thought was my departure gate—only to realize, as I watched a mass of people moving, that the gate had changed! And not just to the next one over… oh no, it was at the furthest possible gate. Note to self: always pay attention to those around you, especially when you don’t speak the local language!

Then there was the tight connection on my way back from Bali, transiting through Australia. The first flight was slightly delayed, and just when I thought I might still make it, we started circling above the airport. By the time we finally landed, my connecting flight was supposed to be leaving. And don’t forget—there’s always another customs check! Luckily, a small group of us made it (just!), but it was a sweaty, stress-filled reminder that tight connections aren’t always worth the risk.

Some factors are out of our control—traffic on the way to the airport, bad weather, unexpected delays, or plane maintenance issues. But there are things you can control to minimize your chances of missing a flight or a tight connection.

Here are my top tips to help you avoid the dreaded “Final Call” announcement with your name on it!

10 Ways to Avoid Missing Your Flight

(and Make Your Connections Smoothly!)

  1. Give Yourself More Time Than You Think You Need.  Always aim to arrive at the airport at least two to three hours before an international flight and 90 minutes before a domestic one. If it’s a busy travel season or an unfamiliar airport, add extra buffer time. (Its better to be sipping a coffee on the other side of customs than being still stuck in check-in queues!)
  2. Use Flight Apps for Real-Time Updates. Download apps like FlightAware, TripIt, or your airline’s official app to track any changes in gate numbers, delays, or schedule adjustments. (Your airline app is super great to update your seat sections too)
  3. Check In Online & Set Flight Alerts. Most airlines allow check-in 24 hours before departure—do it! This saves time at the airport and allows you to choose a seat closer to the front for a quicker exit when you land.
  4. Avoid Tight Layovers. When booking flights with connections, choose layovers of at least 90 minutes for domestic flights and two to three hours for international connections. If it’s a massive airport (hello, Dubai or LAX!), give yourself even more time.(I couldn’t stress this more! I am still staggered at flight itineraries that have an hour to 1.5 hour connections unless connecting via a smaller port)
  5. Know Your Airport Layout. If you have a connection, research the airport layout in advance. Some airports (like Singapore Changi) are a dream, while others (looking at you, Heathrow!) can be a logistical nightmare. Knowing where you need to go saves precious minutes. (Great to to check out the paid lounges, worth the dollars if you have longer layovers)
  6. Pack Smart & Keep Essentials Handy. Keep your passport, boarding passes, and essentials easily accessible. A small crossbody bag for documents is a lifesaver when you’re rushing.
  7. Be Ready for Security & Immigration. Wear easy-to-remove shoes, have your liquids bag ready, and empty your pockets before stepping up to security. If you’re in transit, check if you’ll need to go through another immigration checkpoint—some countries require it, even if you’re just connecting! (OMG how many times do we have to wait for that person to take their belts, shoes etc off when they know its expected)
  8. Stay Aware of Gate Changes. Don’t assume your gate will stay the same! Check the departure boards regularly and listen for announcements. (Set your alarm if there is a risk you might fall asleep)
  9. Choose Early Flights When Possible. Morning flights are less likely to be delayed. If your first flight gets pushed back, it could mess up your entire schedule, so flying earlier gives you more buffer time.
  10. Have a Plan B. If you do miss a connection, know your options. Airlines sometimes rebook automatically, but it helps to have alternative flight routes in mind so you can suggest a quick solution at the counter.

Some other ideas: Travel Tools & Apps to Make Your Life Easier

Google Flights & FlightAware – Track delays and real-time flight status.

TripIt – Organizes your entire trip in one place.

Airline Apps – Get push notifications on gate changes and boarding times.

Mobile Passport – Speeds up U.S. customs clearance (if you’re flying to/from the U.S.).

LoungeBuddy – If you have a long delay, find a comfy airport lounge to relax in.

Photo Folder- Take a photo of your travel documents, passport etc and create a specific folder to keep these in to access quickly at any time.

Remember this mantra: When Things Go Wrong… Roll With It!

Even with the best planning, sometimes things just don’t go your way. Missed flights happen. So take a deep breath, talk to the airline staff politely (trust me, kindness goes a long way!), and focus on solutions rather than stress.

As solo travelers, we learn to embrace the unexpected. Delays and detours? They’re just part of the adventure. So next time you find yourself sprinting through an airport, take a deep breath, channel your inner travel warrior, and remember—you’ve got this!
